The Benefits of DUI Education

Individuals who complete DUI education will retain the skills they’ve acquired for a lifetime. They will gain essential tools for managing their substance use, develop strong decision-making abilities, and build a supportive network to assist them in their recovery. These courses provide participants with the opportunity to learn from past mistakes and make a fresh start.

DUI education can be enhanced with additional treatment for those with severe addiction. These treatments address underlying issues, such as mental health disorders, that lead to substance use. Many individuals with mental health conditions turn to substances to manage stress and symptoms. Substance use can reduce inhibitions, increasing the likelihood of making risky decisions, such as driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Addressing these mental health conditions decreases the likelihood of individuals driving while intoxicated. Throughout treatment, they will acquire healthy coping mechanisms and skills to manage mental illness symptoms that lead to substance use, such as alcohol. Both group and individual therapy sessions will assist them in developing decision-making skills and establishing a supportive network of peers and professionals.

  • The initial step involves an evaluation by a substance use professional. During this assessment, you will be asked questions about your personal details, substance use, and arrest circumstances.

The professional will review information from your arrest, such as your blood alcohol content and other evidence. After gathering all relevant data, they will recommend appropriate treatment for your DUI program. This information is strictly for determining your treatment needs and risk level and cannot be used against you in court.

    The risk levels include:

    • Minimal Risk: Requires completion of at least 10 hours of DUI education, typically spread over five to six weeks with up to two hours of classes each week.

    • Moderate Risk: Involves at least 10 hours of DUI education and 12 hours of early intervention treatment, which must be completed over a minimum of four weeks, with no more than three hours per day each week.

    • Significant Risk: Entails 10 hours of DUI education, 20 hours of substance use treatment, and ongoing participation in an aftercare program.

    • High Risk: Necessitates 75 hours of substance misuse treatment, ongoing participation in aftercare, and attendance in DUI education classes to meet court requirements.

After determining your risk level, a substance use professional will suggest a personalized treatment plan tailored to your needs. During the DUI classes, you may also engage in outpatient treatment or individual therapy.

  • Following the completion of your evaluation, you will begin your instruction. The structure of your DUI education will depend on the location where you attend your classes.

At Purple Clover, DUI classes are conducted in a small group setting with 10-25 participants. To maintain engagement during the course, we use educational movies, invite guest speakers, and administer brief exams to assess your learning. Additionally, we facilitate discussions on how to avoid drinking and driving and make safe decisions.

The DUI instruction will cover various topics, including the impact of alcohol or other substances on driving safety, the health consequences, the potential legal ramifications of DUIs, and taking responsibility for a past DUI charge or conviction. Comprehensive DUI education aims to prevent future incidents.

During your instruction, you may also participate in inpatient or outpatient treatment to address underlying substance use and mental health issues that may have contributed to your DUI charge or conviction. The type of treatment required will be determined during your evaluation and will complement your DUI instruction.

  • Some individuals who complete a DUI program are required to participate in an aftercare program. A 12-step support program is a scientifically proven method that offers lifelong support, aiding in successful recovery and relapse prevention. These programs involve attending therapy or support groups within the treatment facility and the community. Participants will learn healthy coping mechanisms and develop a strong support network to assist in their recovery journey.

Professional counselors will guide you through the process, helping you integrate the skills you learn into your recovery plan. A 12-step program also helps reduce anxiety related to recovery by providing an open forum to discuss concerns and ask questions.

  • Once you’ve completed the DUI program, Purple Clover presents you with a certificate signifying you’ve completed all the required classes and treatments. You can present this certificate to the court to show you’ve completed the court-ordered classes. You may also undergo a follow-up interview to determine whether the program was successful.

Substance use treatment is effective at facilitating recovery and preventing future relapses, especially when treatment lasts for 90 days or more. Even once your DUI program has ended, it’s essential to continue with an aftercare program to maintain the healthy coping skills and support network achieved through treatment.
